Survey: 52 percent of Americans in favor of legalizing marijuana
Thu Apr 4, 2013
Rusty, you use the word "hemp" and that deserves highlighting. Prohibition against marijuana was a prohibition against growing ANY kind of hemp, even varieties that have neglible psychoactive properties (in other words, varieties that don't produce a "high").

Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America by Barbara Ehrenreich is an interesting read. Likely available at the library. The author is a journalist who went undercover working minimum wage jobs in several states to find out how one manages life at that economic life.

Sat Mar 2, 2013
I think VivaLaFrance was talking about the mothers and wives of soldiers and perhaps about women trying to care for their families in war-torn lands. Her observation is spot on but the point she raises is a different conversation.
Despite Yahoo's ban, working from home may be the future
Wed Feb 27, 2013
Oh, tromboner, I disagree. Verrry interesting dialog. Truth is -- though many of us don't really think about -- people who happen not to work in an office already work in a great variety of settings and keep wildly different schedules. Ah, shucks, nbcfan85, truly I regret your disappointment! (It'll still be something to watch the story unfold.) But this is REALLY important information so I'm glad for the reporting.
UN calls for ban on 'grotesque practice' of female genital mutilation
Thu Dec 20, 2012
This is good news. Change in such a deeply-seated custom has to come from within. Keep in mind, the women who do this to their daughters believe that they are only doing what is right, proper and expected. Change is happening.
Electrician facing foreclosure collects $1M Powerball prize
Thu Nov 29, 2012
It's amazing how judgmental people are. Without knowing the full story, not that it's any of our business. Interesting how people fill in the blanks. I'm noting, too, that he didn't say anything about the foreclosure, but I don't draw any conclusions from that.
